About Meridian Tax Law

Our Story

Meridian Tax Law was founded in 2001 by James R. Caldwell and Patricia Nguyen, two former Assistant United States Attorneys who spent nearly a decade prosecuting tax fraud cases for the Department of Justice. After years of seeing taxpayers overwhelmed and underrepresented in disputes with the IRS, they decided to switch sides and advocate for individuals and businesses facing the immense power of the federal tax system. The firm opened its doors in a modest office on LaSalle Street in downtown Chicago with just three attorneys and a shared receptionist. From the very beginning, the mission was clear: provide the same caliber of legal representation that the government uses against taxpayers, but put it to work defending them instead. In those early years, the firm built its reputation on a series of landmark cases that resulted in significant penalty abatements and favorable settlement terms for small business owners who had been targeted by aggressive IRS collection divisions. Word spread quickly through Chicago's business community, and by 2005, the firm had grown to twelve attorneys and moved into its current office in Willis Tower. The expansion continued with the opening of the New York office in 2010, strategically located near the U.S. Tax Court's Manhattan sessions. This allowed the firm to serve clients on both coasts and handle cases in multiple jurisdictions without the delays and expenses of long-distance representation. Today, Meridian Tax Law employs over forty attorneys, paralegals, enrolled agents, and certified public accountants who work together across disciplines to deliver comprehensive tax solutions. The firm's practice areas have expanded well beyond audit defense to include international tax compliance, estate and gift tax planning, corporate restructuring, nonprofit tax-exempt status applications, payroll tax disputes, and criminal tax defense. Every attorney at the firm has either previous government experience or specialized advanced degrees in taxation, ensuring that clients receive advice from people who truly understand how the IRS operates from the inside. The firm is also deeply committed to pro bono work and community service, operating a free tax clinic every April in partnership with the Chicago Bar Association that serves hundreds of low-income taxpayers who cannot afford professional representation. Additionally, firm attorneys regularly teach continuing legal education courses on tax controversy topics and have published extensively in leading tax journals including Tax Notes, the Journal of Taxation, and the American Bar Association's Tax Section publications. Meridian Tax Law has been recognized by Chambers and Partners, Best Lawyers in America, and Super Lawyers for consecutive years, and the firm's founding partners have both been inducted into the Illinois State Bar Association's Tax Law Hall of Fame.
